PBS = Positive Behavior Support

Rosedale Risso's "3 to BE!": BE Respectful  ---  BE Responsible  ---  BE Safe

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a positive, pro-active, team-based, school-wide prevention model for creating and sustaining safe and effective schools. Through clearly defining, teaching and reinforcing our "3 to BE!" Positive Behavior Expectations to all our students, emphasis is placed on the development of pro-social skills, as well as the prevention of and constructive response to problem behaviors.

PBS is a research-based program, originally developed by the University of Oregon, and now used in thousands of schools across the country and hundreds of schools in Michigan. The Michigan Department of Education created an initiative for all  Michigan schools to develop and implement a system of school-wide positive behavior support strategies. Rosedale was proud to launch our PBS program in February of 2009, and as one of the first LPS schools to take on school-wide PBS, Rosedale staff are committed to supporting our students in making continued positive behavior choices. We are also excited to learn that our efforts will be supported by a grant from Wayne County RESA for the 2009-10 school year to further enhance and expand our PBS program.

The Rosedale Risso's "3 to BE"(our school mascot is a Risso, a type of dolphin) clearly and specifically define that we expect RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE and SAFE behavior from all our students, at all times and in all settings of our school. Through a variety of methods, Rosedale administrative, teaching, and support staff look for ways to teach, support and reinforce our students' "3 to BE" behavior choices.

The specific descriptions of of Rosedale's 3 to BE! expectations can be found on posters throughout our school, defining what Respectful, Responsible and Safe behaviors look like in the classroom, halls, lunchroom, bathrooms, library, gym, on the playground, at the bus stop, etc... Morning announcements start the day with our Rosedale Risso 3 to BE! Pledge. Teachers find opportunities to periodically send Positive Notes Home to communicate with parents when their child has made a "3 to BE!" choice. A bit later into this fall, we will also begin to hand out Risso Blue Tickets to reinforce students for chosing "3 to BE!" behavior choices, as well as . This year we will be further expanding a variety of ways to encourage and reinforce our students for their positive choices in intrinsic ways.

The involvement and support of YOU, our students' parents is a crucial piece of our successful PBS TEAM at Rosedale. The more that school and home work together as a cooperative team, the more likely students are to make positive behavior choices. We start the year (and the entry of each new student) by informing parents of our PBS program through a Parent Brochure. An important part of this process is that parents take time to discuss our Rosedale 3 to BE! positive behavior expecations with their child(ren). Then by signing and returning the PBS Parent Pledge, parents actively demonstrate to their child(ren) that they support the school staff and administrator in our cooperative effort to promote a safe and effective learning environment for every student.  As staff, we greatly appreciate the support of our students' parents, as we know that student success, one of our important goals, is based on this foundation of a positive and cooperative school-parent-student team. Thank you!
