Dear Kindergarten Families,

I am so excited to be your child’s teacher this year!  My goal is for your child to have a fun and successful year in Kindergarten.  I have listed my email address and Rosedale’s phone number at the top of this note.  Please feel free to contact me if any situations or questions arise that you would like to discuss.  Email is the best way to reach me as I check my email before and after school.  I will respond to you within 24 hours.

My name is Tracy Weakley.  I have been married to my wonderful husband, Ryan for 6 years.  I have 2 beautiful children – My daughter Ava, is 2 years old and my son Kellen turned 1 in June. I received my degree in Elementary Education with an early childhood endorsement from Eastern Michigan University in 2005. In 2010, I decided to continue my education and received my master’s degree in special education from Madonna University. This is my eighth year teaching.  Before coming to Rosedale I taught preschoolers with special needs at Perrinville Early childhood Center.  I have been working in the Livonia district for a total of 16 years doing before and after school care, substitute teaching and teaching special needs preschoolers.  Teaching is my passion and I am looking forward to a fun and exciting year of working with your child!

Here is some important information to be aware of:

  • Kindergarten begins at 8:54 am and ends at 3:58 pm.
  • The children will enter the building at door #4 which is at the back of the Kindergarten rooms by the playground.  All children should walk around the building to arrive at door #4.
  • Please DO NOT drop off your child before 8:45 as there is no supervision before school.  When children arrive, they are to stand in line by the door quietly until invited in by a teacher. They are NOT to go on the playground.

At the end of the day the children who are picked up will be dismissed to an adult in the office lobby.

If your child rides a bus, we will take them to the gym and make sure they get in the correct bus line.

Dismissal
My dismissal policy is very simple.  I dismiss each child individually.  This way I make sure that no child is left alone without an adult.  Please reinforce this policy with your child.  Even if they see you, they must wait in line until I dismiss them.  This is for your child’s own safety.  The person picking up your child must be listed on the emergency card. Please note:  I WILL NOT release any child to someone who is not listed on the pink emergency card.

Please fill out dismissal information paper that is in your child’s yellow folder.  This is so I know WHO is picking up your child each day and whether they ride a bus.

Early Dismissal
If you must pick up your child early, please write me a note and when you arrive, let the office know.  Mrs. Hill our secretary will call down to the room and your child will meet you at the office door where you can sign them out.

Folders
Each day your child will bring home a yellow folder.  Please keep any papers on the “KEEP AT HOME” side and return the papers on the “RETURN TO SCHOOL” side.  These folders need to be returned every day.  They are an important means of communication between you and I.  If you write me a note, please be sure to put it in the yellow folder so I will be sure to see it.  There will be a volunteer parent or myself checking the folders each day.  I DO NOT check individual back packs for notes or papers from home.

Weekly Communication
I will be working on my web page during the next few weeks.  Please feel free to visit it as I post important information on it.  My website address is:  tweakley@livoniapublicschools.org

I also send home a note each Friday to share with you what your child is learning in our room.

Homework
I do send homework home each week.  It usually consists of 1 page both sides reinforcing the letter and/or high frequency words we learned that week.  Occasionally, there will also be an Everyday Math Homelink page which reinforces the Math lessons we have learned.

Birthdays
After much thought and discussion, the Rosedale staff has decided to eliminate all birthday treats.  This means NO cupcakes, etc. will be passed out. We celebrate in our room by singing Happy Birthday, giving the birthday child a crown, and a small prize from the principal.

Celebrations
From time to time we will be celebrating various special days in our classroom (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, etc.).  Please let me know if you prefer that your child NOT participate in these celebrations.

Snack
Your child will be able to have a snack each day. Due to allergies, I have each child bring their own snack.  They will bring it into the room in the morning and will put it into their cubbie.  Please make sure that your child’s snack is separate from their lunch so children are not eating their lunch during snack.  I allow only healthy snacks such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, yogurt, fruit snacks, pretzels, crackers, etc.  NO cookies, pudding, chips, etc.

Your child may bring in a water bottle filled with only water.  I do not allow juice in the classroom.

Lunch
Now that Kindergarten is all day, your child will be eating lunch at school.  They will have the option of buying a lunch or bringing one from home.  A menu will be sent home soon listing the available foods for buying.  Anyone who is eligible for free/reduced lunch can fill out the forms in the office.  Our lunch time is 12:10- 1:00.  The best way to purchase lunches is to prepay for them.  That way no money has to be counted in school and there will be no worries about lost lunch money. If you do send in lunch money for your child it MUST be in a Ziploc bag or envelope with their name on it. It is too difficult to keep track of loose change for 26 students. Thank you!!

PLEASE NOTIFY ME PERSONALLY IN WRITING OF ANY ALLERGIES YOUR CHILD MAY HAVE!

Rest Time
The day can seem very long to a 5 year old, so we will have a short rest period after the lunch recess.  I will let the children rest on an individual carpet square and play soft relaxing music for 15-20 minutes.  Later on in the year, they will have the option of looking at a book.

Recess
Kindergarten will have 2 recesses during our day.  One will be immediately following lunch and the other will be scheduled for sometime in the afternoon.  The children will be on the playground with the other grades, but they will have a designated play area to stay in.

Volunteers
I love to have volunteers in our room to assist the students with various activities.  I will also have volunteers making copies, cutting, stapling, putting up students work in the classroom or hallway.  I will be sending home information regarding volunteers in a few weeks, as I do not schedule anyone until the children are comfortable with the classroom rules and routines.

Behavior
Kindergarten should be a positive experience for your child.  The best way to achieve this is to make sure that everyone learns to be respectful to others and to the rules and routines in our room and school.  If any issues arise regarding behavior, I will contact you through email, phone, or a note in your child’s yellow folder.

At Rosedale, we have a behavior system called PBS (positive behavior system).  I will explain this in more detail at our curriculum night.

Open House/Curriculum Night
Open House/Curriculum Night is Tuesday September 10 from 6:00-7:30.  More information will follow.

Emergency Cards
Please fill out the 2 pink emergency cards your child brought home.  Remember to fill in at least 2 emergency contacts on the form.  I will only dismiss students to someone who is listed on the emergency card, so keep that in mind as you fill them out.

Part of Kindergarten is fostering independence.  Therefore, I am asking you to allow your child to learn to be an independent problem solver.  If they are late to class, please check in at the office and then let them walk to class alone.  Parents coming to our door or room to drop off a child or backpack can be disruptive to the entire class.

SACC (School Age Child Care)
If your child attends SACC before school, the SACC teacher will walk them to the classroom.  If they attend SACC after school, I will drop them off to the SACC teacher at dismissal time.

Thank you for sharing your child with me this year.  I am looking forward to a great year!

Thank you in advance for all of your support.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Tracy Weakley
