Second Grade Overview

Here is some important information to be aware of:

  • School begins at 8:54 am and ends at 3:58 pm.
  • The children will enter the building through the front doors.
  • Please do not drop off your child before 8:40 unless they are getting breakfast. Students will have indoor line-up each morning. They can put their belongings in their locker and wait in a line outside my classroom.
  • If your child arrives late, it is VERY important that they are walked in to the building by an adult and signed in through the office.

At the end of the day the children who are picked up will be dismissed to an adult outside Door #2 on the east side of the building.

If your child rides a bus, we will take them to the gym and make sure they get in the correct bus line. Bus lines are supervised by adults and safeties.

My dismissal policy is very simple.  I dismiss each child individually.  This way I make sure that no child is left alone without an adult.  Please reinforce this policy with your child.  Even if they see you, they must wait in line until I dismiss them.  This is for your child’s own safety.  The person picking up your child must be listed on the emergency card. Please note:  I WILL NOT release any child to someone who is not listed on the pink emergency card.

Early Dismissal
If you must pick up your child early, please write me a note and when you arrive, let the office know.  Mrs. Sutton, our secretary, will call down to the room and your child will meet you at the office door where you can sign them out.

Each day your child will bring home a red plastic folder.  Please go through these folders each night in case there are notes or homework. Please empty out all checked work and school notes as well. These folders need to be returned every day.  They are an important means of communication between you and I.  The monthly behavior log will be in the folder each night.  If you write me a note, please be sure to put it in the red folder so I will be sure to see it.   I am not able check individual back packs for notes or papers from home.

I will have a weekly newsletter almost every Friday. This note will contain the week's events, studies, and any special information. It also includes my email address and a calendar.

We will have Everyday Math Homelink pages which reinforces the Math lessons we have learned. These pages will be hi-lited each night there is homework. The students will also have weekly spelling lists and should be reading at home each night.

Due to the high number of food allergies in our school, we do not allow birthday snacks or treats. This means no food items will be passed out. We celebrate in our room by singing Happy Birthday, giving the birthday child a bracelet and a small prize from the principal. If you choose, you may send in small prizes such as pencils or a small toy for your child to pass out. Again, this is completely optional.

From time to time we will be celebrating various special days in our classroom (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and End of the Year Party).  Please let me know if you prefer that your child NOT participate in these celebrations. A volunteer sign up sheet will be available at Open House. I will also be looking for a room mom or a team of room moms!

Your child will be able to have a snack each day at around 10:00. Due to allergies, I have each child bring their own snack.  They will bring it into the room in the morning and keep it in their desks. Please make sure that your child’s snack is separate from their lunch so children are not eating their lunch during snack.  I allow only healthy snacks such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, yogurt, fruit snacks, pretzels, crackers, etc.  NO cookies, pudding, chips, etc. Sugary snacks do not help our kiddos focus!

Your child may bring in a water bottle filled with water.  Please no juice.

Students will have the option of buying a lunch or bringing one from home.  A menu will be sent home listing the available foods for buying.  Anyone who is eligible for free/reduced lunch can fill out the forms on line.  Our lunch time is 12:50-1:15.  The best way to purchase lunches is to prepay for them.  That way no money has to be counted in school and there will be no worries about lost lunch money. If you do send in lunch money for your child it MUST be in a Ziploc bag or envelope with their name on it. It is too difficult to keep track of loose change for all students. Thank you!!

Second graders will have 2 recesses during our day.  One will be immediately following lunch and the other will be scheduled at the end of the day.  The children will be on the playground with the other grades, but they will have a designated play area to stay in.  Their are 3 adults on the playground supervising at recess.

I love to have volunteers in our room to assist the students with various activities.  I will also have volunteers making copies, cutting, stapling, putting up students work in the classroom or hallway. If you are interested in volunteering, please send me a note! I would love to have you. You will need to fill out an iChat form on the district website.

2nd grade should be a positive experience for your child.  The best way to achieve this is to make sure that everyone learns to be respectful to others and to the rules and routines in our room and school.  If any behavior issues arise, I will contact you through email, phone, or a note in your child’s purple folder.

Emergency Cards
Please fill out the pink emergency cards your child brought home.  Remember to fill in at least 2 emergency contacts on the form.  I will only dismiss students to someone who is listed on the emergency card, so keep that in mind as you fill them out.

2nd grade will continue to work on building independence.  Therefore, I am asking you to allow your child to learn to be an independent problem solver.  If they are late to class, please check in at the office and then let them walk to class alone.  Parents coming to our door or room to drop off a child or backpack can be disruptive to the entire class.

SACC (School Age Child Care)
If your child attends SACC before school, the SACC teacher will walk them to the classroom.  If they attend SACC after school, I will drop them off to the SACC teacher at dismissal time.
